The Rafto Prize has been awarded to Pastor Bulambo Lembelembe Josué of the Democratic Republic of Congo for his efforts to promote hope, peace and human dignity in Eastern Congo.

The Rafto Prize was awarded today to Pastor Bulambo Lembelembe Josué of the Democratic Republic of Congo for his efforts to promote hope, peace and human dignity in Eastern Congo.

“This selection of this year’s Rafto Prize winner is a good and important one. It sets a spotlight on a forgotten crisis and the tireless efforts of a local hero to promote peace and reconciliation in Eastern Congo,” commented Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre.

“Many thousands of women and children are subjected to brutal forms of abuse in Congo every year. Gang rape is used systematically to break up communities, and the humanitarian consequences are disastrous,” Mr Støre continued.

Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim added, “For several years, Norway has supported Pastor Bulambo’s projects to help former child soldiers and rape victims and to promote reconciliation, through the Norwegian Pentecostal Church. This year, we are increasing our funding for efforts in Congo to prevent sexualised violence and provide protection and help to victims.”
