After a week of hostilities, it is very positive that the parties have agreed on a ceasefire,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide.

Around 150 people have been killed, and even more wounded in the latest conflict in and around Gaza. The civilian population in Gaza has been particularly hard hit. Over the last few days, Egypt has mediated between the parties, and a final agreement was reached on Wednesday evening.

“I would like to commend Egypt for its resolute efforts that culminated in the ceasefire agreement. The engagement of the US in the final phase was also decisive. It is now crucial that all parties comply with the agreement and refrain from further acts of violence.

“I am cautiously optimistic that the agreement will hold, and that a further escalation of the conflict can be avoided. However, peace between Israel and the Palestinians in the long term can only be achieved through negotiations and a political solution,” said Mr Eide.
