- Even though Norway needs labour, the Norwegian government has no plans of importing labour from Turkey, as some Turkish media claim, says the Norwegian Minister of labour and social inclusion, Bjarne Håkon Hanssen.

During a meeting with the Turkish Minister of labour Thursday February 14th the issue of Norway’s great demand for labour was discussed. Hanssen described the situation in Norway, where Norwegian companies now find themselves in need of labour. The Minister also mentioned the ongoing work on a government white paper on labour immigration. This will be presented in April, and will among other things include suggestions on how to simplify application procedures for persons outside the EEA-area.

It is Norwegian companies that will have to do the recruiting of skilled labour from Turkey, says Hanssen. He emphasises that people looking for jobs in Norway must have the relevant education, for example as engineer or craftsman, and that they need a concrete job offer before applying for a work permit.

More information on criteria regarding work permits can be found on the website of UDI (Norwegian Directorate of Immigration).
