Minister of Local Government and Modernisation Nikolai Astrup (Conservative Party)

The Minister of Local Government is responsible for steering administrative policy, local government finances, local administration and the conduct of elections, planning, housing and building policy, coordinating the government’s work on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, national mapping and geodata policy, government employer policy, central government building and property management, administrative responsibility for county governors, contact with the Royal House of Norway, and administrative responsibility for the Ministry of Local Government and Modernisation.

Biography

Nikolai Astrup has served as Minister of Local Government and Modernisation Minister since January 2020. He is a member of the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation.

He was Minister of Digitalisation in Norway from January 2019 until January 2020. From January 2018 to January 2019, Astrup served as Minister of International Development.

Astrup holds a master's degree in European Politics and Governance and a bachelor's degree in International Relations, both from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

He was elected Member of Parliament from 2009 to 2018 and leader of the Conservative Party in Oslo from 2012 to 2018. In parliament, Astrup was member of the Standing Committee on Energy and the Environment, the Standing Committee on Transport and Communication, and the Standing Committee on Finance. Astrup was the editor of the conservative periodical Minerva from 2001 to 2008. Astrup is 42 years old, married and has three children.
