Flags will be flown at half-mast at the Royal residences, government buildings and military bases from the day of King Harald’s death until after the funeral. The funeral will be held at Oslo Cathedral on Wednesday 9 September at 13:00.

Bells were tolled at all the churches in Norway on the day of King Harald’s death, and the same will be done on the day of the funeral. The Church of Norway will be holding mourning services throughout the country, and these services will be open to all.

On the day of the funeral, there will be one minute’s silence across the country in memory of King Harald from 13:00 to 13:01. The beginning and end of the minute’s silence will be marked with three bell tolls from all the country’s churches.

The Government and central government agencies will mark the period of national mourning in a number of ways. Official activities and events may be carried out as planned, but any events held during this period are to be appropriately respectful and should mark the fact that the nation is in mourning. Social events that are not work-related will be cancelled or postponed.

Beyond this, there are no clearly defined rules for how to observe the national mourning period. Most activities and events may be carried out as normal, but it will be appropriate to mark the fact that the nation is in mourning. The Government has published a guide for the national mourning period, which provides guidance on how individuals, organisations, companies, and municipalities can mark the period of national mourning.

Books of condolence will be opened at the town hall (or equivalent) in all the country’s municipalities. In larger municipalities, the mayor may consider opening books of condolence at other locations too. The municipalities are also requested to designate a place in the municipality where people can light candles or lay flowers or other tributes in memory of King Harald. In Oslo, floral and other tributes may be laid in the Palace Square.

The Office of the Prime Minister has sent a letter to the Offices of the County Governor and the various government ministries with information about the period of national mourning.
