EU proposes safeguard measures on ferroalloys

Statements from Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth:
- The government has been informed that the EU is nearing a decision on safeguard measures on ferroalloys, and that Norway will be subject to these measures.
- We disagree with the EU on this. The government believes that Norway should not be subject to the safeguard measures. Our view is that it is incompatible with the EEA Agreement to subject Norway to such measures.
- The Commission’s proposal will now be considered by the member states. The government will continue its efforts towards the member states in the coming days. We have been in contact with the EU on this matter since the commission initiated safeguard investigations into imports of alloys in December last year.
- These are global measures intended to protect the EU’s own industry against global overproduction. The EU’s proposal is not primarily directed at Norway, but it will be imposed on Norwegian exports. The government has been in close contact with Norwegian industry, the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO), and the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO), and is now working closely with the companies to understand the consequences of these measures for Norwegian exports, should these measures be put in place.
