Norwegian Ministry of Justice Extends Option Deadline for Purchasing Additional Rescue Helicopters with Leonardo
Press release | No: 139 - 2025 | Date: 09/12/2025 | Ministry of Justice and Public Security
The Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MoJ) has agreed with Leonardo to extend the option deadline for purchasing additional AW101 SAR Queen rescue helicopters by two months.
Leonardo offered the MoJ a two-month extension to exercise the option for acquiring more AW101 SAR Queen rescue helicopters, and the Ministry has decided to accept this offer.
Under the NAWSARH programme, 16 AW101 helicopters were procured, with an option to order up to six additional aircraft. The option was set to expire on 31 December this year, but Leonardo and the MoJ have agreed to extend the deadline until 28 February 2026.
The extension allows the MoJ to fully assess all alternatives and costs related to the rescue helicopter base in Tromsø. Leonardo is working closely with the Ministry to refine program considerations and ensure that all configuration options can be evaluated to deliver SAR operations.
'An extension of the deadline is appropriate for both parties. I am pleased that we have a good collaboration with Leonardo, enabling us to find solid solutions together, says Minister of Justice and Public Security Astri Aas-Hansen.
The Government will within a short time present a proposition to the Storting with a proposal for the future solution for operating the rescue helicopter base in Tromsø.
