Minister of Development condemns attack on hospital in South Sudan

On 3 February, one of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières' hospitals in Lankien, north-east South Sudan, was hit by an air strike carried out by government forces. The attack destroyed the hospital's main warehouse containing large quantities of vital medical supplies, and one employee was injured.
‘I strongly condemn the bombing of the Médecins Sans Frontières hospital in Lankien, South Sudan. Attacks on medical facilities, health workers and patients are serious violations of international humanitarian law.’
‘The fact that the hospital's location was shared with all parties prior to the attack makes the incident particularly serious and shows a clear lack of respect for humanitarian principles. The protection of health workers is a fundamental requirement of international humanitarian law. They must be protected to provide life-saving assistance to people in need.’
‘South Sudan is in a very challenging political and security situation, with developments in recent months taking a negative turn. This is exacerbating the man-made humanitarian crisis that is hitting the civilian population hard. I therefore call on the country's leaders to take responsibility for the safety and protection of all citizens, including political opponents, and to engage in dialogue that can contribute to a political solution.’
