Last week, Mona Juul was relieved of her duties while the Ministry investigates the extent of her knowledge of — and contact with — Epstein.

'With her early departure from Jordan, it means she will not return as ambassador. Until a new ambassador is appointed, the embassy will be led by a deputy ambassador. This ensures that normal operations continue, even in a demanding situation,' Eide adds.

Documents related to Epstein have revealed several details concerning Mona Juul. Based on these findings, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated an investigation into Juul's knowledge of and contact with Epstein. The process is governed by the Civil Service Act, which outlines the duties of public servants and officials, both during and outside of work. This investigation will continue even after Juul steps down.

'It's important to understand the extent of her contact with Epstein in her capacity as an employee of the Ministry. Juul will continue dialogues with the Ministry so that the case is clarified and we can determine whether her previous explanations align with the new information. This is necessary for both parties, and particularly, we need to determine whether the relationship impacted her work as a diplomat,' Eide states.

The internal investigation will form the basis for the Ministry's assessment of potential further consequences for Mona Juul's employment.

'I also look forward to responding to questions from the Storting's Committee on Scrutiny and Constitutional Affairs in connection with the Storting's review of the Epstein case. Openness is essential in that process,' Eide adds.

In light of the information disclosed, a review has also been initiated regarding the Ministry's funding of and contact with the International Peace Institute (IPI) during the period when Terje Rød-Larsen headed the organisation.

'The revelations about Terje Rød-Larsen and his contact with Epstein are extensive and deeply troubling. There is no doubt that Rød-Larsen exhibited poor judgment in this matter,' Eide comments.

The Office of the Auditor General has previously reviewed the Ministry's funding of IPI for the period 2007–2012. Since then, the Ministry has implemented extensive reforms in its grant management.

'The internal review we are now conducting within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is indispensable for establishing the facts. We take this matter with the utmost seriousness. We must clarify any breaches of regulations and how certain employees handled their dealings with Epstein. My thoughts go out to all victims of abuse in this gravely serious case,' Eide concludes.
