Norway increases support for fight against hunger in South Sudan

Norway is increasing support to the World Food Programme (WFP) in South Sudan. An additional USD Nok 128.6 million (approx. USD 12.7 million) will go towards the WFP’s emergency assistance and efforts that strengthen community resilience.
‘The situation in South Sudan is dramatic. Six million people do not have enough to eat. Norway is therefore strengthening its support for WFP’s life-saving work,’ says Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust.
The humanitarian crisis in South Sudan is severe and worsened by escalating violence, extensive flood damage following a heavy rainy season, and large refugee flows from the war in Sudan. The UN estimates that the number of people facing hunger could exceed half of the population within the next six months.
‘Norway will continue to contribute to stabilising the situation, by providing emergency assistance and supporting longer-term efforts to make the population less vulnerable to hunger in the future,’ says Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust.
Conflict, climate change, and economic collapse are problems that reinforce each other in South Sudan. This has created an increasingly challenging situation for ordinary South Sudanese people.
Norway has for many years been one of WFP’s key partners in South Sudan. The new agreement ensures that emergency aid reaches the most vulnerable, while also supporting long-term measures to build resilience in local communities.
