New Syria fund for reconstruction: ‘Taking charge of its own future’, said Aukrust

At the request of the Syrian authorities, the World Bank has decided to establish a multi-donor trust fund for Syria. Norway will contribute approximately NOK 90 million to the fund. The funding will support Syria’s reconstruction efforts, including in the health and energy sectors.
The fund is intended to mobilise additional financing and facilitate a more coordinated and effective international response in Syria. 14 years of war have caused widespread destruction across the country. The World Bank has estimated that reconstruction will cost at least USD 216 billion.
'When I visited Syria last year, I saw the scale of the destruction across the country from the war. Both infrastructure and state institutions need to be rebuilt. The Syrians I met were clear that they themselves must lead this effort, with support from the international community. This reflects Syria’s determination to take charge of its own development. The fund will support this important effort,' said Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust.
The World Bank has made the fund a high priority, and it is expected to become operational in 2026. Norway will contribute around NOK 90 million to the fund. The support will focus, among other areas, on health and energy.
'The priority now is to accelerate reconstruction. A strong private sector is essential for economic growth and job creation. For Syria to succeed, the economy must get moving. This fund will help make that happen,' said Aukrust.
