‘Just a few years ago, there were few who believed that this would be possible. But now it’s a reality. The project shows that carbon capture and storage works and can be carried out across national borders. Norwegian expertise and infrastructure are being used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions far beyond Norway’s own borders and are playing an important role in Europe's green transition,’ said Prime Minister Støre.

Storage on the Norwegian continental shelf

The carbon capture facility at Yara’s fertiliser plant in Sluiskil will capture up to 800 000 tonnes of CO₂ a year. The CO₂ will be transported by ship to the Northern Lights receiving terminal in Øygarden, Norway, and put into permanent storage on the Norwegian continental shelf, 2 600 metres under the seabed. The transport from Sluiskil is the first international delivery under Longship, the Norwegian Government’s full-scale carbon capture and storage project.

Long-term agreement on transport and storage

The Prime Minister and his Dutch counterpart were given a tour of the new capture facility and met representatives of the business sector and project partners. Yara has entered into a long-term agreement with Northern Lights on the transport and storage of CO₂ from the plant. The project is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 12 million tonnes over 15 years, equivalent to around 0.5 per cent of the Netherlands’ annual emissions.

‘If Europe is to succeed in achieving the green transition, we must develop solutions that both reduce emissions and safeguard jobs. Carbon capture and storage is vital in this context and makes it possible to cut greenhouse gas emissions in sectors where alternative technologies are not available. Together with the Netherlands, we are demonstrating how European partnerships are helping to realise shared climate ambitions and develop the industries of the future,’ said Mr Støre.
