‘The people of Ukraine are living with the impacts of Russia’s brutal war every day. Lately we have seen a surge in missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities, homes and critical infrastructure. The attacks on civilians are both systematic and arbitrary. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to fight for its freedom, independence and the right to determine its own future. That is why it is so important that Norway continues to stand with the Ukrainian people,’ said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

In Kyiv today, Prime Minister Støre will be taking part in a summit meeting between Ukraine and the Nordic-Baltic countries. He will also attend a ceremony to mark Ukraine’s National Flag Day and meet with representatives of various Ukrainian authorities. 

Visit to affected area

Mr Støre also visited the market in Kyiv’s Lukianivska neighbourhood, which has come under repeated Russian bombardment.

‘It was shocking to see the devastation left by the recent wave of Russian attacks against Kyiv. The resilience shown by the Ukrainians is impressive,’ said the Prime Minister.

Extraordinary level of support to be maintained

In 2026 Norway is providing a total of NOK 85 billion in civilian and military support to Ukraine under the Nansen Support Programme for Ukraine, which runs from 2023 to 2030. The Government is proposing that Norway extends its extraordinary support to Ukraine by maintaining its allocation of NOK 85 billion in 2027 as well.

Strategic partnership and new defence agreement

Prime Minister Støre and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a joint declaration on the establishment of a strategic partnership between Norway and Ukraine.

‘This strategic partnership will enable us to strengthen our cooperation with Ukraine in areas where our two countries have much to learn from each other. Ukraine has accumulated vital experience and expertise, particularly in the areas of defence and preparedness. This could be of great benefit to us in our efforts to increase resilience in Norway,’ said Mr Støre.
