Norwegian UMTS-licenses awarded

The following four have been awarded nation-wide licences to develop and operate a third generation (3G) system for mobile telecommunications in Norway: Broadband Mobile ASA, NetCom GSM as, Tele2 Norge AS and Telenor ASA.

The licences have been awarded as a result of a beauty contest emphasising geographical coverage and roll out.

On 31 May 2000 the Ministry of Transport and Communications invited to tender for up to four licences for the development and operation of a third generation mobile telecommunication system in Norway. The deadline for the applications was 14 August 2000. Seven companies or consortia applied. In addition to the four licensees Broadwave Communication AS, Orange Norge AS and Reach AS applied for the licences.
