Historic Barents Days in Tromsø

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with Tromsø municipality to arrange the 06 Barents Days from 9 to 14 November.

At this year’s event, special emphasis will be given to young people and their future in the High North. A youth conference with participants from the whole of the Barents region is being held from 9 to 11 November. The event will gather over 100 participants from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, who will discuss how they want the Barents region to be developed in future.

The Barents Days will also encompass research, business development and cultural events. Most events, such as various concerts, the family day at Tromsø’s Kulturhuset and the research days at the University, will be open to the public. The main musical attraction is the gala concert on 10 November, at which the Egyptian group Sharkiap Fathy Salamah and the Norwegian saxophonist Trygve Seim will perform together. Other artists who will be performing include Sainkho Namtchylak, a Tuvan throat singer and the musicians Miles Jay, Jan Gunnar Hoff and Helge Norbakken. The Barentsjazz event will also be taking place during this period, from 8 to 12 November (see www.barentsjazz.no).

State Secretaries Liv Monica B. Stubholt and Kjetil Skogrand, as well as political adviser Gry Larsen, will represent the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at various Barents Days events. The Barents Days are a unique opportunity for Tromsø municipality to promote the resources and institutions in Tromsø that are working on High North issues. The Barents Days are also intended to be a high-profile warm-up for the launch of the Government’s High North strategy in Tromsø.
