Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre has taken the initiative for a conference entitled The Oslo Policy Forum on Changing the Way We Develop: Dealing with Disasters and Climate Change, which will be held in Oslo at Soria Moria from 28 to 29 February. Mr Støre will open the conference.

The conference will gather participants from countries in the South and a number of international organisations. Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and Special Advisor to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, will give the keynote speech on 29 February.

Climate change, good governance, urbanisation and the fight against poverty will be the main themes, with reference to the recent white paper Norwegian policy on the prevention of humanitarian crises (Report No. 9 (2007-2008) to the Storting).

The conference follows on from the climate change conference in Bali, and will focus on adaptation to climate change and practical measures to prevent climate-related humanitarian crises. It will be an opportunity to exchange experience of concrete risk reduction measures in connection with climate change in vulnerable countries.
