Flag day in connection with the 60th anniversary of the UN

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided that United Nations Day on 24 October should be an official flag day this year in connection with the 60 th> anniversary of the UN.

Norway was one of the 50 countries that established the world organisation in 1945 through signing the UN Charter. The UN has since been a cornerstone of Norwegian foreign policy. It is the world’s only global arena for resolving conflicts and problems that require joint solutions. The UN’s tasks cover a wide range of efforts relating to peace and conflict resolution, human rights and development co-operation.

Norway has worked actively over the years to promote an international community based on the UN Charter, international law and binding international co-operation. In addition to its membership of the UN, Norway is also a member of a number of specialised agencies, such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO).
