Norway urges Eritrea to cooperate with the UN

Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has expressed deep concern about the recent development in the border conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Eritrea has asked all western personnel in the UN-led peacekeeping mission to leave the country within ten days. This could further increase tension in the border area between Ethiopia and Eritrea and threaten the stalled peace process.

“It is unacceptable for Eritrea to decide unilaterally which countries are to take part in the mission,” said Mr Støre. “We are urging Eritrea to cooperate fully with the peacekeeping mission, in line with the UN Security Council resolution of 25 November this year. At the same time we are emphasising that Ethiopia must fulfil the commitments it has made and accept the decision of the Boundary Commission in accordance with the peace agreement of 2000.

“Both countries must now demonstrate real willingness to do what is necessary to create lasting peace in the region. Norway chairs the group of friends of the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and is prepared to support the parties in efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully,” added Mr Støre.
