- I am delighted that the parties in Kenya have finally reached an agreement on power-sharing and a coalition government, says Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre.

“I am delighted that the parties in Kenya have finally reached an agreement on power-sharing and a coalition government,” says Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre. “The situation was extremely critical, and an agreement was absolutely essential in order to prevent a flare-up of the violence, and further humanitarian suffering for the Kenyan people. Stability in Kenya is vital for the region as a whole.”

“We greatly appreciate the important contribution made by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and his team. Without their tireless determination, stamina and sense of purpose, an agreement would have been harder to reach. This was a commendable effort,” says Mr Støre.

“An important milestone in the work to secure stability and lasting peace has now been passed, but a huge task remains. The parties must find a solution to the underlying causes of the crisis, such as the distribution of land, resources, and power in Kenyan society as a whole. It is now essential that the parties begin this process, and start to plot out the course of future reform,” says the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
“Norway will, along with the rest of the international community, continue to support a constructive process, and will contribute both politically and financially to efforts to secure stability, democracy and justice in Kenya,” says Mr Støre.
