The purpose of the review-article is to discuss current applications of international military force in peace processes. The following issues will be covered: (1) the potential for a constructive engagement of international military forces at various stages of a peace process; (2) multifunctional military missions and its impact on the division of labour between international military force and other types of actors; (3) the duration of international military presence as well as sequencing in relation to other efforts by the international community and to the building of national capacities; (4) the importance of local and national ownership of the security arrangement, and the various means by which ownership can be fostered; and (5) alternative models for the involvement of international military capacities and personnel.
