Mutual green certificate market will not be established – too expensive for Norwegian customers

Since January this year, Norway and Sweden have discussed the possibility of a mutual Norwegian-Swedish green certificate market. Based on the result of these talks, the Norwegian government has reached the conclusion that a common certificate market will not be established.

The reason is that a Norwegian-Swedish green certificate market would become too expensive for the Norwegian consumers and the industry. The Government will instead strengthen the focus on already established instruments. This will also ensure that the commitment to both biobased heating and energy efficiency and renewable energy production is equally strengthened.

-I want to strengthen the Energy Fund and Enova to promote an environmental friendly energy change. The emphasis will be on biobased heating, energy efficiency and renewable electricity production, thus following up central elements of our government declaration, says Mr. Odd Roger Enoksen, Minister of Petroleum and Energy.

An increased commitment to Enova can contribute to just as much renewable energy production, at a lower cost for the Norwegian society than the cost of implementing a green certificate market.

The Minister of Petroleum and Energy will as soon as possible present the framework for an increased focus on heat and energy production based on renewable energy sources.
