Access to the Palace Square

The Palace Square is open and accessible to media wishing to cover events from there. All media representatives present in the Palace Square are asked to follow the instructions given by members of His Majesty The King's Guard and the Royal Court staff.

The following rules apply:

Areas

  • There are no restrictions on photography by the media other than directions issued by the police and the King's Guard.
  • Certain areas of the Palace Square have been specially designated for live broadcasts and interviews. Members of the media are requested to limit their live broadcasts to just these areas so as not to obstruct pedestrian access. The main area for live broadcasts and interviews is located on the southern side of the Palace Square, facing Henriks Ibsens gate, and will be clearly marked. Information about additional live broadcast areas will be published on the kongehuset.no website as they are established.
  • The main area for live broadcasts (on the southern side of the Square, facing Henrik Ibsens gate) will be equipped with power supply. To access electricity from the power distribution cabinet, media representatives will need to bring an outdoor-rated extension lead.
  • Media representatives are required to provide their own internet access.

Accreditation

  • All members of the media wishing to cover the events from the Palace Square must present a valid press card or other relevant identification proving that they are participating as media representatives.
  • No press accreditation is required for press coverage from the Palace Square except on the day of the funeral.

Traffic access and parking

  • The Queen's Park (Dronningparken) will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicle traffic unless prior authorisation has been granted.
  • It will not be permitted to park any vehicles in the Palace Square or the Palace Park.
  • Permission to park on the grounds of the Royal Palace will only be granted to those with prior authorisation. This will primarily be reserved for those taking part in the media pool.
  • Parking permission will only apply in connection with previously agreed activities and not for any other forms of media coverage. All parking permission must be obtained in advance to gain access to the area.

Press Centre

A press centre will be established in Professorboligen at the University of Oslo, Karl Johans gate 47 on Saturday 29 August. The centre will provide workstations and internet access for visiting Norwegian and international media representatives. The opening hours will be from 09:00 to 17:00.

Media representatives wishing to make use of the press centre must be able to present a valid press card.

Information meetings

Regular information meetings for the media will be held at the press centre. The media will be informed of the timing of these meetings.

The information meetings are intended to help media representatives to plan their coverage of events, and there will not be an opportunity for interviews. Media representatives wishing to attend these meetings must be able to present a valid press card.

Accreditation for the oath of allegiance ceremony at the Storting  

Members of the media who wish to cover the oath of allegiance ceremony at the Storting should contact the Storting by email at presse@stortinget.no.

Accreditation for the day of the funeral

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responsibility, on behalf of the Royal Court, for accreditation of media representatives who wish to have access to dedicated press areas on the day of the funeral. Dedicated press areas will be set up in the Palace Square, along Karl Johans gate, outside Oslo Cathedral and at Akershus Fortress. Restrictions will apply to movement between press areas.

All media representatives who wish to have access to the dedicated press areas along the procession route must apply for accreditation. The number of places available will be limited. Information regarding the opening of the accreditation process will be published on this page.
