‘Norway and the UK are close allies working together to navigate a turbulent world. We are investing in security, defence and technology to keep our nations safe, now and in the future. Our partnership in the areas of energy and green industry is of vital importance in advancing the green transition,’ said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Mr Starmer and Mr Støre discussed the efforts to achieve a peace agreement in Ukraine, defence cooperation, including through NATO and the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), energy and in particular the green industrial partnership between Norway and the UK.

‘Norway and the UK are standing shoulder to shoulder in supporting Ukraine. We have a shared responsibility for ensuring European security and strengthening the transatlantic community. The British presence in the High North plays a crucial role in safeguarding Norwegian and European security,’ said Mr Støre.

Safeguarding security in an unstable world

Earlier today, the Norwegian and UK Ministers of Defence signed a new comprehensive Norwegian-UK defence agreement that represents a historic strengthening of defence cooperation between the two countries.

Norway and the UK have an established green industrial partnership and the two Prime Ministers discussed how to further strengthen cooperation in a number of areas including offshore wind and carbon capture and storage.

‘The green transition can only be achieved through international cooperation. The UK is a key partner to Norway in developing solutions that will reduce emissions and create new jobs,’ said Mr Støre.

Strategic partnership

Mr Støre and Mr Starmer agreed on the way forward for the strategic partnership between the two countries, which covers a wide range of areas, from security and defence to energy, green industry, trade, education and research.
