On November 28th, Minister of Defence Tore O. Sandvik welcomed his South Korean counterpart Ahn Gyu-back for a bilateral meeting.
“The Republic of Korea is an important partner in the Indo-Pacific region, both bilaterally and through NATO's partnership agreement. Our conversation led to valuable insights regarding the security situation in our respective geographical areas and further strengthening of our bilateral security ties. We also discussed our close cooperation within the defense industrial domain,” stated Sandvik.
The Norwegian Armed Forces employ South Korean K9 artillery, and the logistics vessel KNM Maud was built in South Korea. As stated in our long-term plan, Norway has decided to procure long-range precision fire and South Korea is among the potential suppliers.
The two ministers laid a wreath at the veterans' monument at Akershus Fortress in memory of the Korean War. Over 600 Norwegian men and women participated in the Korean War between 1951 and 1954. These were predominantly medical personnel at the Normash field hospital whose mission was to treat wounded soldiers and provide health services to civilians.
