Child benefit

Those who have children under 18 years of age living permanently with them are entitled to child benefit. Child benefit is payable for each child without any means or needs testing and is tax-free.
Parents automatically receive child benefit for a newborn child. That means that in most cases parents do not need to apply for child benefit for a newborn child. However, if the child is older than six months or the parent is entitled to a higher child benefit, an application must nonetheless be made. A higher child benefit means that a parent who has sole care of the child is given child benefit for one child more than the actual number of children that he or she has the care and control of.
The child benefit scheme is managed by the Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV).
