Department of Media and the Arts

The Department of Media and the Arts is responsible for the development of national policy relating to freedom of expression, print and digital media, gaming, foundations, copyright, cultural and creative industries, film, computer games, music, the performing arts and artist support schemes. The department also administers legislation in these areas, as well as licensing and grant schemes for relevant state and non-state bodies and institutions.

The department consists of the following sections

  • MA1

    The section is responsible for print and digital media, gaming and issues related to the supervision of foundations. It also bears responsibility for oversight of the Norwegian Media Authority and the Norwegian Gaming and Foundation Authority, as well as management of the Norwegian State’s shareholdings in the companies Norsk rikskringkasting AS and Norsk Tipping AS.

  • MA2

    The section is responsible for copyright, cultural and creative industries, film and computer games, as well as oversight of the Norwegian Film Institute and management of the Norwegian State’s shareholding in the company Filmparken AS.

  • MA3

    The section is responsible for music, the performing arts and artist support schemes, as well as regional reforms in the cultural policy field. The section also has responsibility for oversight of the Arts Council Norway and Riksteatret theatre, in addition to management of the Norwegian State’s shareholding in the companies Den Norske Opera & Ballett AS, Nationaltheatret AS, Den Nationale Scene AS, Trøndelag teater AS, Rogaland Teater AS, Carte Blanche AS and Talent Norge AS.
