Section for Humanitarian Policy and Long-term Development Initiatives

The Section for Humanitarian Policy and Long-term Development Initiatives is responsible for developing Norwegian policy on humanitarian issues, health, education and food security and incorporating this into Norway’s foreign and development policy. The Section works to strengthen coordination between humanitarian action and long-term development efforts, in line with the humanitarian principles and the SDGs.

Activities under the Section include policy development, participation in multilateral processes and negotiations, as well as coordination of Norwegian positions in relevant international forums. The Section is responsible for cooperation with key UN organisations and thematic funds, and works closely with Norad, other ministries, diplomatic and consular missions and civil society actors.

The Section makes strategic use of humanitarian and development policy instruments to address global challenges ranging from crises and hunger to health challenges and lack of education. The Section is responsible for following up Norwegian humanitarian policy in line with Norway’s Humanitarian Strategy and in the work on global initiatives such as G20 and UN processes.
