I congratulate Navi Pillay on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. The prize sends a powerful signal of support for the cause of human rights, international law, and international humanitarian law, principles that Norway holds in the highest regard.
Respect for these rules is a prerequisite for peaceful coexistence. There can be no impunity for those who violate them.
Pillay, born in apartheid-era South Africa, is a brave voice. She has dedicated her life to the pursuit of justice. Pillay has made significant impact through her work as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in the International Criminal Court and in the International Court of Justice. At a time marked by war, conflict, and violations of human rights, these institutions are more important than ever.
