Für mich ist Deutschland ein enger Freund Norwegens und unser wichtigster Partner in Europa. Die partnerschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen Norwegen und Deutschland beruhen auf einem tief verwurzelten Vertrauen, gegenseitigem Respekt und gelebter Offenheit.

Norwegen schätzt die Schritte, die Deutschland international unternommen hat, um in diesen herausfordernden Zeiten Führungsstärke und Verantwortung zu zeigen. Das ist sehr wichtig.

Germany is Norway’s most important trading partner. In so many places and stages of the value chain, I see German knowledge and your invaluable contributions. We are close partners. We have a shared vision in today’s Europe. I am very pleased that the German government and the Chancellor are taking on this responsibility – in these challenging times – saying that Europe must unite around these values and develop a strategy to defend Europe.

Germany is the most important economic power in Europe. Your leadership is essential. As you said, we are part of the European Economic Area. Your message of seeing Europe as a whole is welcome. We are ready to contribute.

Our energy cooperation is important. We supply 50 percent of Germany’s gas. But gas is not just a commodity. It is also a source of technological progress. We must expand our energy partnership and also tap into the field of renewable energy sources.

On Ukraine: This is a matter of great concern to us, and we have often discussed it. I want to take this opportunity to say that Norway stands ready to provide additional funding for Ukraine’s air defence.

We plan to do this in close cooperation with Germany. We are trusted partners. This is something where we can see joint financing to create something concrete for Ukraine. Our industries are working together to provide something within the field of air defence and missile defence for Ukraine.

We are also considering how to develop systems and deliver Patriot systems to Ukraine. That is important. But to do that, we need partners. We need the United States. We are counting on the President. He has made that very clear. We need a quick commitment.

Germany is making an important contribution to the air defence initiative, which is essential for Ukraine, as it faces attacks on its civilian infrastructure. One thing is what is happening on the battlefield, but what is happening at night in Ukrainian cities is unacceptable, and we condemn it in the strongest terms.

You mentioned energy. You also touched on areas like space and cooperation in that field. We should work more together on that, under the heading of economic security. Because Europe must be independent when it comes to knowledge in the fields of space and energy. This is not only an economic issue but also a security issue.

I am pleased that we now have a declaration on strategic partnership. We will move this forward. We will deepen it in the area of defence in the autumn. There are still things to discuss.

I’ll just mention a few more points – critical raw materials, the maritime industry, what we are doing in the Arctic, the defence industry, digitalization, the green energy transition, and also what we are doing in the area of CO₂ storage (CCS) and hydrogen – these are also important areas for us of cooperation with Germany.

Friedrich, I would like to once again emphasize Germany’s clear position and leadership on the issue of Ukraine and its support. Of course, this is about defending international law, but also about maintaining order in Europe.

As democracies, we must come together and talk about the new security architecture and structure in Europe. We must look to the future. There is a war on the continent, but we also have to look ahead.

The same applies to the Middle East, where there is another war and deep uncertainty. No war in the Middle East is without consequences for other countries. I look forward to continuing the dialogue with you on this as well.
