The Foreign Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic, Chingiz Aidarbekov, paid an official visit to Norway on 15 January. In Oslo, he met with the Norwegian Foreign Minister, Ine Eriksen Søreide.
– The Kyrgyz Republic is an important partner for Norway in Central Asia. We encourage the Kyrgyz Republic to further democratic development, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide.
The Ministers confirmed that the two countries share common interests and a committement to promote the fundamental values of democracy, rule of law and human rights.
The broad range of issues the Ministers discussed included continued Norwegian support to strengthening institutional capacity in the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as continued cooperation in multilateral fora. An initiative to alleviate the consequences of the Soviet uranium mining in the Central Asian region, was also on the agenda.
Foreign Minister Aidarbekov also met with the Minister of Justice, Tor Mikkel Wara, as well as the Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs and Defence at the Storting. He also paid a visit to the Mayor of Oslo. The Statistics Norway, the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA) also briefed the Minister on their activities in the Kyrgyz Republic.
