Foreign Minister comments on Palestinian parliamentary elections

“The way the Palestinian people have managed to hold democratic elections while under occupation inspires respect. The high turn-out reflects a strong commitment to democracy among the population,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

“I expect any party that takes part in a democratic process to observe the democratic rules of play, including renouncing violence,” Mr Støre continued.

As chair of the international donor group, Norway, will soon begin an assessment of how the group should proceed in supporting the Palestinians, in cooperation with the Palestinian authorities.

Norway will continue to support the Palestinian people and to promote an independent, democratic and viable Palestinian state.

“The form of our cooperation with the new Palestinian government will be considered in the light of the political signals it gives,” concluded the Minister.
