Norway allocates USD 10 million to the interim Palestinian government

Today Norway is transferring USD 10 million (NOK 67 million) to an international joint aid package to finance the salaries of Palestinian Authority employees. The Norwegian funds will be used to help pay teachers’ salaries for February and March.

“The Norwegian allocation is intended as financial emergency relief in a situation where the Palestinian interim government has an acute need for assistance in paying salaries,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. “More than one million Palestinians are directly dependent on this income.”

“Our contribution is a response to a request from Quartet envoy James Wolfensohn, said the Foreign Minister. “The EU, Russia and Saudi Arabia are also contributing funds to this joint aid package.”

The donor countries have stipulated that the salaries must be paid by the current interim government. A new Palestinian government that reflects Hamas’ election victory is expected to be formed by 28 March at the latest.
