Statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway on the military take-over of the transitional government in Sudan

“Norway is deeply alarmed at the serious development of the current situation in Sudan where General al-Burhan, the leader of the Sudan’s Sovereign Council, has dissolved the institutions of the state and introduced a state of emergency.
We call on the security forces to release Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok and all others who have been detained. The security forces have the responsibility to protect the public. Any form of violence against peaceful demonstrators must stop immediately. Those responsible for transgressions must be held accountable.
The people of Sudan have a self-evident right, also enshrined in the Constitutional Declaration, to express their views and determine their own future. The only legitimate way to solve political disagreements, including on the Sudan’s way forward, is through open dialogue. There can be no return to authoritarian rule.
The situation is extremely serious. Since the 2019 revolution, Sudan has made strides forward and the international community has fully supported the transition. These gains are now at risk of being reversed with dramatic consequences.
Norway stands with the people of Sudan and their aspiration for inclusive development, freedom, peace, and justice. All parties must immediately return to dialogue and engage in the civilian-led transition.”
